Shimna u3a is based in Newcastle, County Down, at the foot of the Mourne Mountains. The group was formed on 23rd February 2011 with 24 members. We now have over 130 members from Newcastle and the surrounding area.
We meet at 2.00pm on the third Tuesday of each month at Newcastle Community Cinema.
Visitors are most welcome to join us for our monthly meetings with an invited speaker, refreshments and socialising.
As well the monthly meetings we also have interest groups which meet on a weekly, monthly or occasional basis. These include walking, theatre, photography, culinary and the book group. For details of all group activities see the groups page.
You must be a current Shimna u3a member in order to take part in any groups. This is essential to ensure that your participation in our activities is covered by u3a’s insurance.

Monthly Meeting - Tuesday 17th November at 2pm
The History of Newcastle
Ivor Anderson, well known for History of Newcastle Facebook page, will continue his very popular talk from last year. This time he will talk about the history of Newcastle from 1890 onwards.
Book Club - Thursday 19th November
The book group met at the Lighthouse Lounge in the Slieve Donard Hotel at 11.00am. Next month's book "Atmosphere" by Taylor Jenkins Reid is available in the library now. Please contact Meta Warrin for further information.
The November walks will take place on Friday 13th and 27th November starting at 11am. We will meet in Tollymore Forest Car park beside the information board. As both walks will be along forest tracks good walking shoes and rainwear are required.

Joan Scott has kindly agreed to co-ordinate theatre trips going forward.
At present Joan is organising a trip to see a musical version of Waking Ned at the Lyric on Tuesday 23rd February. "Ned" has won a fortune on the lottery so it should be good fun. Please contact Joan for further information.
The group hope to launch their Calendar for 2027 in the very near future. All proceeds from the sale of the Calendar will go to the Cancer Fund for Children support centre, Daisy Lodge. Daisy Lodge is a purpose-built therapeutic centre located on the Bryansford Road in Newcastle. It is available to families across the island of Ireland affected by cancer and allows them to spend quality time together in a safe and supportive environment, far removed from the pressures of cancer treatment and hospital wards.
The November meeting has been postponed.
